What personal data we collect and why we collect it at Fiendishlyclever

What personal data we collect

  • Your IP address is collected in server logs for diagnostic purposes as you browse the site.
  • Your name, email address and IP address are collected when you fill in the contact form.
  • Your name, email address and social media details are collected if you leave a comment on a blog post (in addition to the actual comment)
  • Demographic information such as age, sex, GeoLocation, browser/device, preferences, and interests is provided to the site owner by Google Analytics.

What we do with the data you collect

  • Your IP address in the server logs is collected for diagnostic purposes and to help keep the site secure. It is deleted at the end of each month when a new log is started
  • The information collected when you complete the contact form is emailed to the site owner. Details submitted using the contact form submission data (IP address, user agent, email address, site URL, and comment) is submitted to the Akismet service (also owned by Automattic) for spam checking.
  • When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
  • The information provided by Google Analytics/Wordpress Stats is used to measure the number of visitors to the site and to improve the service we provide. We have requested that data collected by Google Analytics is not shared with Google. Google Analytics data is anonymised and does not collect personal information (so your consent is not required)

How long we keep your information

  • If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
  • Server logs are deleted at the end of each month
  • Contact form submission data is stored in the database of the fiendishlyclever site and deleted during housekeeping at regular intervals.
  • Google retain analytics data for a period of 14 months which allows us to make year on year comparisons. Data collected is not linked to an individual IP address.
  • For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
  • Contractual emails and those related to payment for services are kept for six years in line with guidance from the UK Inland Revenue. Other emails are deleted when no longer required (usually on response)

Embedded content from other websites

  • Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
  • These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

  • IP information, contact information etc will not be shared with anyone without the express consent of the person providing it (unless required to do so by law)
  • For the Google Analytics and Google Adsense (advertising) cookies, Google is the data processor. Data gathered through Google Analytics is retained by Google for 14 months (Data sharing with Google is not enabled within Google Analytics, data collected is anonymised and can’t be linked back to an individual)

What rights you have over your data

  • If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us.
  • You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
  • You can make requests through the contact page.

Caching

This site utilizes caching in order to facilitate a faster response time and better user experience. Caching potentially stores a duplicate copy of every web page that is on display on this site. All cache files are temporary and are never accessed by any third party, except as necessary to obtain technical support from the cache plugin vendor. Cache files expire on a schedule set by the site administrator, but may easily be purged by the admin before their natural expiration, if necessary.
